The Thai Community Ghana LBG held its annual Songkran Festival Ghana on April 11, 2026 in Accra. Under the theme “Bangkok City,” many Thai nationals and lovers of Thai culture gathered at the Mensvic Hotel in East Legon for a cultural experience. This marked the third time the Thai community in Ghana is celebrating Songkran in Accra.
Songkran is the traditional Thai New Year and is deeply rooted in Thai culture, symbolizing renewal, respect, and blessings for the year ahead. The festival is celebrated annually in mid-April, and the Ghana celebration will take place on April 11 in alignment with this traditional observance. Traditionally, people pour water over elders’ hands as a sign of respect, gratitude, and cleansing, reflecting the cultural values of humility, unity, and family.

Since its registration last year, the Thai Community has been actively promoting Thai culture and strengthening ties between Thais and Ghanaians. The community has organized several cultural and social initiatives, including Songkran celebrations, Loy Krathong festivities, Thai cooking classes, Thai language lessons at a local school, and a donation outreach at Remar Ghana Children’s House, among others.
According to Chantira Phumisakha, President of Thai Community Ghana LBG and Honorary Volunteer Thai Consul in Ghana, the celebration is an important opportunity to share Thai traditions while fostering community spirit locally.

Attendees were treated to an authentic Thai culinary experience. The annual Miss Songkran beauty pageant welcomed participants from Ghana and Thailand alike. Dance cover groups Wolf-G and KAJE, booked by illee, wowed the audience with their moves to popular Thai songs.
“In Ghana, we adapt the celebration by blending Thai traditions with the local community spirit,” Madam Phumisakha explained. “While we maintain key cultural elements such as water blessings, Thai dance, and ceremonies, we also create an inclusive event that welcomes people from all backgrounds to join and enjoy the experience together,” the honorary volunteer consul added.

Guided by the tagline “Far from home, never alone,” Thai Community Ghana LBG continues to promote unity, belonging, cultural pride, and cross-cultural appreciation among Thais in Ghana and the wider community.
